My neighbour has recently has installed the brightest security lights known to man. Honestly you would need sunglasses to look directly at them. The lights are at the front and back, so not only is the front of my house is lit up for free, so is my back garden. I know very kind! 🙄

What makes it worse is that the lights are motion activated, which means if an owl farts it lights up his and my home.

Is there any law against light invasion in the UK? I am finding it really intrusive and every evening have what I like to call the "Light show".

As always the best thing to do is make sure your neighbour is aware of your issue with his light. He can simply tilt it down or buy a shield to stop it disturbing you.

Perhaps if he set it on a time this may help resolve the issue of it turning off and on.

If the problem of light nuisance persist and your neighbour continues I would recommend approach your council.

The following is a excerpt from the .gov website regarding artificial light nuisances:

"For the artificial light to count as a statutory nuisance it must do one of the following:

  • unreasonably and substantially interfere with the use or enjoyment of a home or other premises
  • injure health or be likely to injure health"

So, this is not an issue for the police but to firstly and hopefully find a mutual resolve with your neighbour about the security light. Failing that, contact your council.

I hope that helps 🙂

Thank you, I am just investigating some tall shrubs to block the light. I did approach and he "wasn't comfortable with making changes to the light setting" 🤬

Love thy neighbour !

I have every sympathy for you as we had this in our old property. The neighbour put his security light up so high it shone down into our garden and window.

An owls fart would set it off, so it was an inconsistent light.

We purchased black out blinds and kind of got use to it as the neighbour was a bully and would of loved the fact it annoyed us 🙄
